In late November 2020, a Legionella alert was issued for Hurstville, in Sydney Australia, following the notification of two cases of Legionnaires’ disease. Both cases spent time in and around the Hurstville area in November.
The Public Health Unit has launched an investigation into cooling towers in the area to check for Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaire’s disease.
It is important to note that Legionnaires’ disease cannot be spread from person to person. Outbreaks of the disease are most frequently linked to contaminated water-cooling systems of air conditioning plants in large buildings. However, it can also be found in Warm Water systems, typically in Hospitals, Aged Care Facilities, where water is distributed to the areas of personal ablution at 45C.
Edson Global recommends not only installing a Copper/Silver Ionisation system as part of the preventive management of Legionella and Biofilm but routine Legionella testing must be carried out as part of the overall strategy. The standard testing usually requires a sample from the cooling tower or the warm water system to be sent to a laboratory for a 10-14 day “culture test”. One of the downfalls of this method, is the delayed action as a result of the 10-14 days required for the testing to be completed. The longer it takes to be notified of any positive tests, prevents early detection and treatment.
We are pleased to partner with Hydrosense to offer the Hydrosense Legionella Rapid Response Test Kit as part of our preventative management strategy in Australia. This test can be carried out onsite, it is simple to use with no experience required, and will give results within 25 minutes for Legionella. This rapid testing allows for a proactive response to reduce the risk of an outbreak and helps you maintain high service standards where you can make quicker, better informed decisions when managing and treating Legionella.
